Jacksonville, Florida-Visiting Cumberland University used a pounding rushing attack on offense in a 38-16 win over host Edward Waters College in a penalty plagued game played Saturday afternoon at Christian Field on the campus of University Christian High School.
The Phoenix went into the locker room leading 35-10 at halftime. The loss dropped the EWC Tigers to 0-3 and the win boosted the CU Phoenix record to 4-0. CU RB Telvin Rucker led the Phoenix running game with 20 carries for140 yards and one touchdown, a 31-yard run with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter. CU QB Joseph Rushin had 13 carries for 69 yards while starting QB Dezmon Huntley had 9 carries for 44 yards and 1 touchdown (17-yard run). Rushin also completed 12 for 19 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown, a 17-yard run at 12:27 in the first quarter.
Tiger QB Christian Hayes (FR/Lubbock, TX) led the ground game for EWC with 16 carries for 101 yards. Hayes completed 14 of 24 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown, a 22-yard toss to WR Basil Spencer (SO/Ft. Lauderdale, FL) (5 receptions for 90 yards) in the third quarter. Penalties stymied the Tigers in the first half and throughout the game. The Tigers were flagged on 13 penalties for 117 yards while CU had 3 for 19 yards. In all, CU finished with 426 yards of total offense (244 rushing and 182 passing) while EWC had 367 total yards on offense (134 rushing and 233 passing). On defense for EWC, DB Joey Williams (SR/Jacksonville, FL) had 10 tackles (5 unassisted and 4 assisted) and one sack, LB Gavin Anderson (JR/Pahokee, FL) had 8 (3 unassisted and 5 assisted) and Bruce Thomas (JR/Delray Beach, FL) had 7 (3 unassisted and 4 assisted). Phoenix DB Alex Campagne had 8 tackles (5 unassisted and 3 assisted) and DB DeAnthony Patrick netted 7 (5 unassisted and 2 assisted).
Edward Waters will face the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands, next Saturday, September 23rd at 4:30pm at University Christian School.
